Short Bio:
A Moon Shape Noise is the solo electroacoustic project of Brandon Manitoba based artist and multi-instrumentalist Brendon Ehinger. AMSN primarily uses modular synthesis to weave acoustic instrumentation and field
recordings into ephemeral soundscapes that blur the line between sound art and musical performance. Ehinger’s practice explores relationships between technology and the natural world through the lens of his evolving Métis identity.
Ehinger has performed solo and collaboratively in alternative spaces, galleries and venues in Canada, the US and Europe, is the recipient of multiple arts grants, and is the founding director of Prairie Wires—an experimental music
event series and festival in Brandon. He is also a father, partner and graphic designer.
Long Bio:
Brendon Ehinger is a Métis/Settler multi-instrumentalist and sound artist based in Brandon, MB, Canada. His long history of involvement in the Winnipeg Music scene spans decades including such acts as
Bucko!, Mikimoto, Volüm, and The VaGiants. Since 2013 he has been performing solo experimental electroacoustic improvisations under the moniker A Moon Shape Noise, and has developed a
performative sound art practice that uses a combination of modular synthesis, acoustic instrumentation, live mic input and field recordings to explore relationships between technology, the natural world, and his own identity. His
sound explorations first listen and observe their subject, then respond with attempts to sonically reconcile the intrusion.
Ehinger has performed solo in alternative spaces, galleries and venues in Canada and Europe including The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba and Brandon University School of Music, (Brandon, MB), Videopool/The Output (Winnipeg, MB), Cluster Festival of Integrated Arts (online/Winnipeg, MB), Neutral Ground ARC (Regina, SK), and Warte Für Kunst (Kassel, Germany). He occasionally collaborates with Brandon University professor of low brass Nora Wilson under the name wire+bone, performing at Wheat City Nuit Blanche (Brandon, MB), Nuit Blanche YXE (Saskatoon, SK), Send + Receive Allyways (Winnipeg, MB), and Prairie Wires (Brandon, MB). He is the recipient of many arts council grants and residencies, and his recent involvement as co-lead artist in the CCA funded Sonic Dreaming project with Tahltan performance artist Peter Morin and musician/educator Nora Wilson expands on his personal practice, investigating postcolonial sound-making and composition practices that put the land and territory in the role of active collaborator.
Brendon Ehinger is also a father, partner, freelance graphic designer and the founder of Prairie Wires, an experimental music and sound art event series established in 2019 to create opportunities for sound-based artists and experimental electronic musicians, to gather, share knowledge, collaborate, and perform. With a strong focus on modular synthesis, Prairie Wires produces curated concert events that celebrate artists from the prairie region of Canada and beyond, strengthening ties and building connections between communities. Past events have included live and virtual live-streamed concerts for International Drone Day and Culture Days, as well as a free biannual modular synthesizer meet up and festival, Prairie Wires Modular. Past live presentations have included artists: Matthew Cardinal (AB) and Stephanie Kuse (SK); Casey Koyczan (YT/MB); Jennifer Theisen (MB); Leanne Zacharias (MB); Shotgun Jimmie (MB); Brady Allard (MB); Ernie Dulanowski (SK); Ali Khan/Yoyu (MB); Alison Burdeny (MB); Lindsay Joy (MB); and has included digital submissions by sound artists: Crys Cole (MB/DE); Andrea Roberts (MB); Kelly Ruth (AB); Jeff Morton (SK); Adrien Lefebvre (FR); and many more.
